What is Denim and Where Does it Come From?
The name denim comes from the French serge de Nîmes, a durable twill first woven in Nîmes. This strong cotton fabric was favoured for its ability to withstand years of wear while softening beautifully over time. A similar textile from Genoa, Italy – known as jean – also contributed to the fabric’s heritage and its name in English.
When Were Jeans Invented?
In 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis revolutionised workwear by patenting trousers with copper rivets for strength. Built for miners during the California Gold Rush, these trousers – the first “blue jeans” – offered unmatched durability in the harshest conditions.
Why is Denim Traditionally Blue?
Denim’s distinctive blue colour comes from indigo dye, historically extracted from plants. Indigo bonds to the surface of the yarn but not its core, leaving the inner threads white. As the outer layer wears, denim develops a unique fade – telling the story of its wearer’s life and movement.

In the 1930s, Hollywood Westerns cast jeans as the attire of rugged cowboys. By the 1950s, cultural icons such as James Dean transformed them into a symbol of youthful rebellion.
